Link Hong Kong Open: Major day for McKibbin after record victory

Tom McKibbin made a spectacular debut on the Asian Tour, claiming victory at the US$2 million Link Hong Kong Open held at the prestigious Hong Kong Golf Club.

The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland dominated from start to finish, shooting an impressive final-round 63 to end at 27-under-par 253 — breaking the tournament’s 72-hole scoring record and equaling its largest winning margin.

American Peter Uihlein finished second, seven shots behind after a 68, while Japan’s Tomoyo Ikemura, South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, and American MJ Maguire tied for third, one stroke further back. This event marked the seventh stop of nine in The International Series, a set of LIV Golf–supported tournaments on the Asian Tour.

McKibbin’s stunning performance not only earned him the title but also secured invitations to both The Open and The Masters next year — his debut at Augusta National and third appearance in The Open.

Reflecting on his win, McKibbin said it was one of the best performances of his career:

“I played some of the best golf I’ve ever played. Shooting those kinds of scores here is pretty special.”

Starting the final round with a one-shot advantage, he stayed composed through the front nine and then surged ahead with a string of birdies on holes 10, 11, 13, 14, and 16. A lone bogey on the last was just his third all week.

“This tournament has such a rich history and incredible past champions,” he added. “To break the scoring record is something I’ll never forget.”

The previous record of 22-under was shared by José María Olazábal, Ian Poulter, and Patrick Reed, while Bernhard Langer and Bill Brask previously held the record for the largest margin of victory.

For runner-up Peter Uihlein, a costly quadruple bogey on the 14th hole derailed his challenge, but he still managed a strong finish.

“It was a mixed day — I had both a quadruple and a triple this week, so to end up second isn’t bad,” said Uihlein. “I love this course and this event. It’s one of my favorites, and I’ll keep coming back.”

Uihlein also praised McKibbin’s composure and precision:

“He was incredible — seven-under on Sunday, barely missed a green. Just amazing to watch.”

The Asian Tour and The International Series will continue next week with the Moutai Singapore Open.

Guntaek Koh of Korea delivered a career-defining performance at the New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sport, shooting a course-record-equalling 10-under-par 61 on the Remarkables course at Millbrook. This remarkable round, which included an eagle, nine birdies, and just one bogey, propelled Koh into a three-shot lead over Australian James Marchesani, who scored a 65.

Koh, now 17-under-par, is joined at the top of the leaderboard by fellow Asian Tour members. China's Bai Zhengkai secured third place with a 64, while reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion John Catlin and South Africa's Ian Snyman trail by one more stroke. Catlin achieved a 64 on the Coronet course, while Snyman carded a 65 on Remarkables.

Overnight leader Harrison Crowe from Australia slipped to joint 12th after a 71, six shots off the lead.

Koh, a proven winner on home soil with a victory at the 2023 Shinhan Donghae Open, is determined to make his mark internationally. He credited his strong iron play for his success, stating, "My iron play was really good, it helped me attack the greens. That’s what got me into this position."

Looking ahead, Koh emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset to carry his momentum into the weekend. Notably, he was unaware of matching the course record during play, saying, "It’s very meaningful. I didn’t even know I shot the course record."

Bai Zhengkai, who graduated from this year's Qualifying School, highlighted improvements in his putting as key to his strong performance. He noted, "Putting was my weakness before but now I am able to make some putts."

Ian Snyman, a form player last year, continues to impress and enjoys the hospitality in Queenstown, feeling at home with his host family.
